Chiesa della Beata Vergine dell'Incoronata, building in Martinengo, Italy
Chiesa della Beata Vergine dell'Incoronata is a church building in Martinengo, Lombardy, featuring a simple facade with two pointed arches and an integrated bell tower. The exterior is decorated with a continuous pattern of terracotta arches, while the interior contains two main spaces with wooden and vaulted ceilings, four small chapels, and a choir with ribbed vaulting.
The church was founded in the second half of the 15th century after Bartolomeo Colleoni obtained papal permission in 1471 to establish a monastic community. The church was officially consecrated by the local bishop in 1476.
The church is dedicated to the Crowned Virgin and was founded by Bartolomeo Colleoni, a renowned military leader of the region. Visitors can still see today the veneration of Saint Agatha, Martinengo's patron saint, whose images appear in several places throughout the church.
The church is open during daytime hours and offers a view of the interior furnishings with frescoes from different periods, mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries. Take time to explore the details of the four side chapels and the choir, as the interior contains many historical artworks.
A scene from the film 'The Tree of the Wooden Clogs' was filmed in the adjacent cloister courtyard, selected for its simple beauty. Film director Ermanno Olmi found in this courtyard the perfect backdrop for his work.
