Santa Maria Assunta Church, church in Cologno al Serio, Italy
Santa Maria Assunta Church is a Baroque church building in Cologno al Serio built between 1720 and 1764 following designs by architect Giovan Battista Caniana. The interior features a long nave with side chapels, a barrel-vaulted ceiling with ribs, a large altar, and elaborate wooden choir furnishings with walnut inlays depicting biblical figures.
The church was built in the early 1700s to replace an older medieval church as the community expanded. Construction extended over several decades and was completed in the mid-1700s with the addition of the marble-clad main facade designed by Francesco Antonio Caniana.
The church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and has long served as the center for community celebrations and religious processions. Local residents gather here especially on August 15th for the Feast of the Assumption and in early May for a procession honoring Saint Eurosia, showing how deeply this building is woven into village traditions.
The church is centrally located in Cologno al Serio next to Piazza Cardinale Agliardi and is easily reached on foot. It is open during services and certain feast days, and visitors are welcome to enter to view the architectural and artistic details.
One distinctive feature is the old bell tower which may come from a medieval structure and shows the connection between the current church and the area's earlier times. The campanile with its red brick and peaked roof remains a recognizable landmark in the townscape.
