The building belonged to the Montecchi family, wealthy merchants and influential political figures in 13th-century Verona. They were caught in the fierce rivalries between competing noble families that shaped the city during this turbulent period.

The building is strongly associated with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, drawing literary enthusiasts from around the world. Its facade and courtyard have become central to how visitors experience the famous story in Verona.

The interior spaces are closed to visitors, but you can view the exterior facade and courtyard from the street. A restaurant operates on the ground floor and provides a vantage point to experience the building's interior layout while dining.

The structure contains layers from different construction periods, blending original medieval stonework with Renaissance windows and 18th-century modifications. These overlapping changes tell the story of renovations and adaptations the building underwent across generations.
