Palazzo della Ragione, Medieval palace in central Verona, Italy
The Palazzo della Ragione is a medieval building in central Verona, located between two major squares. The structure features a quadrangular design with an inner courtyard surrounded by covered porticos, creating a distinctive architectural form.
After the 1117 earthquake, Verona's government built this palace as one of Italy's earliest public buildings. It served as the city's town hall for centuries and became a symbol of civic independence.
The palace now houses the Achille Forti Modern Art Gallery, where 19th and 20th-century works hang within its historic rooms. Visitors find here an important collection of Italian art pieces that connects the interior of the building with modern culture.
The building is open Tuesday through Sunday, and visitors can explore both the interior rooms and the central courtyard. It is best to arrive in the morning to avoid crowds and see the architecture in better light.
In 1226, representatives from various Italian cities gathered in this building to renew the Lombard League against Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. This meeting was a significant political event that showed the importance of the place in Italian history.
