Palace of Cansignorio, Medieval palace in Piazza dei Signori, Verona, Italy.
The Palace of Cansignorio is a medieval palace on Piazza dei Signori in Verona with a massive Scaliger tower and a three-tiered loggia featuring arcaded galleries. The building contains a 15th-century central courtyard and displays characteristics from different construction periods.
The palace was built in the 13th century as a residence for the Scaliger family and was redesigned by Cansignorio in the second half of the 14th century. The portal was added in 1533 by Michele Sanmicheli for Venetian authorities and reflects influences from Roman monuments.
The loggia once displayed frescoes by local artists from the 14th century, some of which are now visible in city museums. Visitors can observe the remaining architectural details that reflect the artistic traditions of that era.
The building is generally not open to the public, but information about possible visits can be obtained from local tourist services. The best way to see the facade and exterior features is to walk around the main square, where the building occupies a prominent location.
The entrance facade was designed by one of the most important Renaissance architects as a later addition to the medieval complex. This addition shows how the palace reflected changing tastes and power dynamics in the city over the centuries.
