Castello dell'Abate is a medieval defensive building on the hilltop of Castellabate, surrounded by stone walls and four corner towers. Its position above the old town gives a clear view over the narrow lanes and the sea beyond.
The fortress was begun in the early twelfth century under Abbot Costabile Gentilcore, and work continued under his successor Simeone. It later passed through local lords, suffered wartime damage, and was sold into private hands in the nineteenth century.
Inside the hilltop compound, miniature models of the village lanes and houses help visitors picture daily life in the past. The open areas between the walls now serve as gathering spots for art shows, music and seasonal celebrations.
