Ueno-okachimachi Station, metro station in Taito, Tokyo, Japan
Ueno-okachimachi Station is an underground metro station in the Ueno district of Tokyo, served by the Toei Oedo Line. The platforms sit deep below street level, and the station connects through underground passages to several neighboring stations in the area.
The station opened in 2000 as part of the launch of the Toei Oedo Line, one of Tokyo's newer metro lines. It was built to give the Ueno and Okachimachi areas a direct connection to the broader subway network.
The name Ueno-okachimachi joins two neighboring areas, Ueno and Okachimachi, both long associated with street markets and everyday commerce. Stepping out of the station, visitors land near the Ameyoko market street, where food stalls and small shops line the tracks of an old elevated railway.
The station has several exits that surface at different points near Ueno and Okachimachi, so it helps to check which exit leads closest to your destination before heading up. The Oedo Line runs deep underground, so allow extra time for the escalator and stair sections.
The Toei Oedo Line is one of the deepest metro lines in Tokyo, and this station reflects that, with long escalator runs descending through several levels before reaching the platform. Travelers heading to the main JR Ueno station can do so entirely underground, without stepping outside, through a connected passage.
