Hiroshima Airport, Commercial airport in Mihara, Japan
Hiroshima Airport is an international facility in the mountains east of the namesake city with a runway measuring roughly 3,000 meters (about 10,000 feet) in length. The terminal is organized with separate zones for domestic and international flights, where travelers find shops, restaurants and service facilities.
The airport building opened in late October 1993 and replaced the earlier facility that could accommodate neither larger aircraft nor spatial growth. The mountainous location offered more space for future expansion and the needs of modern aviation.
The airport's name, though located in Mihara, reflects its role connecting the region with the prefectural capital. Travelers use it as a starting point to reach temples, shrines and historic sites across Western Japan.
Limousine buses run regularly to the city center and take just under an hour, accepting cashless payment. The elevated location means occasionally foggy conditions, so travelers should allow extra time for possible delays.
Advanced landing approach equipment added in 2009 allows takeoffs and landings even during thick fog or very poor visibility. This technology is rare among Japanese regional airports and reduces delays during difficult weather considerably.
