Mount Kanmuri, Mountain peak in Hatsukaichi, Japan
Mount Kanmuri is a mountain summit in Hiroshima Prefecture that rises to 1,339 meters above sea level and marks the westernmost point of the Chugoku Mountains. The slopes feature several distinct vegetation zones and are accessible by well-maintained hiking trails.
The mountain was designated as part of the Nishi-Chugoku Sanchi Quasi-National Park to protect its natural features and geological importance. This status recognized its role as a key part of the region's landscape conservation efforts.
The name Kanmuri is shared by several peaks in Hiroshima Prefecture, so this summit is often called Yoshiwa-Kanmuri to set it apart. You can sense this local naming tradition as you walk the trails and encounter signs using both names.
The mountain is reachable by car in about 10 minutes from the Yoshiwa Interchange on the Chugoku Expressway, which runs along its southern base. Well-marked trails begin from accessible parking areas, and conditions vary with the season and weather.
The southern slopes contain extensive rhododendron groves designated as natural monuments by Hiroshima Prefecture authorities. These flower-rich areas often go unnoticed by hikers, despite their striking display during blooming season.
