Tsuwano Castle, Mountain fortress in Tsuwano, Japan
Tsuwano Castle consists of ruins situated on Mount Shiroyama, rising roughly 200 meters above the town of Tsuwano below. The remaining stone walls are visible from the summit and offer expansive views across the surrounding valley.
The fortification was founded in 1282 by Yoshimi Yoriyuki following the Mongol invasions that changed defensive needs in the region. During the 16th century, it endured a four-month siege when regional conflicts erupted.
The shrine at the base of the ruins maintains traditional practices where horseback archers still gather. This sacred place keeps alive a form of martial training that dates back centuries.
A chairlift operates from the base up to the site from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, with a 15-minute walk following to reach the main areas. The best time to visit is in the morning when visibility is clearest and you can see the full valley below.
During early morning or evening hours in October and November, valleys surrounding the ruins fill with clouds in a phenomenon locals call unkai. This natural occurrence creates the sense of floating above a sea of mist.
