Shimajigawa Dam, Gravity dam in Shūnan, Japan
Shimajigawa Dam is a concrete structure that spans the Shimaji River in Yamaguchi Prefecture and creates Lake Takase. It stands about 89 meters tall and stretches over 240 meters wide, holding water for the region's needs.
Construction of the dam began to improve water management for the region and was completed in 1980. The project represented an important turning point in how the prefecture handled its water resources.
The dam created Lake Takase, which changed the local landscape and introduced new ways for people in the area to spend time outdoors. Today residents and visitors use the lake for daily activities and leisure.
The dam is located along an accessible section of the river and offers viewpoints across the lake. A visit is most pleasant during drier weather when the surroundings are easier to see and explore.
This dam was the first in the world to use an innovative construction method that became standard in dam building globally. The technique allowed for faster completion and greater structural stability in the concrete.
