Kikonai Station, Railway interchange station in Kikonai, Japan
Kikonai Station is a railway interchange station in Kikonai in Japan serving both high-speed trains and local connections. The high-speed trains stop at two platforms positioned roughly 6 meters above ground level while regional trains arrive and depart from an island platform located at street level.
The station opened in October 1930 as part of a local railway line and became the terminus for the Matsumae route in 1937. Transformation into an interchange happened decades later with the development of long-distance connections to Hokkaido.
The name Kikonai appears in historical records with different written forms reflecting the area's evolving identity over centuries. Travelers today notice references to these names at both platforms alongside geographic markers showing the region's position near Tsugaru Strait.
Though no staff are present on site, travelers find a tourism office in the nearby building complex along with coin lockers for storing personal items. Access to both platform levels is available through stairs and ramps with signage marking both local and long-distance connections.
The high-speed tracks rest above the roof of the regional platforms creating an uncommon two-tier design. This arrangement emerged because both networks use different track gauges and cannot connect directly.
