Himeji Station, Railway station in Himeji, Japan
Himeji Station is a railway terminal in Himeji, Japan, serving both regional and high-speed connections. Four elevated island platforms handle conventional trains, while Shinkansen tracks run on a separate level at 19 meters elevation, dividing long-distance travel from local operations.
Sanyo Railway opened the terminal in December 1888 as part of its main line through the region. The Bantan Railway connection followed in 1894 and expanded links to the north, while the entire conventional track structure was moved to an elevated level in 1994.
This terminal serves as the starting point for most visitors heading to the castle, which can be seen from the north side of the building. The wide avenue leading directly to the fortress entrance begins just outside the main exit and is used daily by travelers from across the country.
On weekdays, more than 50000 travelers move through the facilities, so passages are particularly busy during morning and evening hours. Platforms for regional trains sit above ground level, while high-speed services arrive and depart from a dedicated tier.
The 1994 reconstruction lifted all regional tracks upward and moved every freight terminal and switching yard completely to new locations. This reorganization changed the entire track layout and created open space below the elevated platforms, now used for other purposes.
