Furano

Located in central Hokkaido, Furano extends across 600 square kilometers of rolling hills, mountains, and forests along the Sorachi River valley.

The first settlers arrived in 1897, and after the railway connection to Asahikawa opened in 1900, the area developed into an official city by 1966.

The name originates from the Ainu word 'Fura-nui', referring to the sulfuric emissions from the volcanic activity near Tokachi Peak.

The Furano Cheese Factory provides free demonstrations of cheese making processes and offers visitors opportunities to taste fresh dairy products throughout the year.

Furano produces more carrots than any other region in Japan and maintains extensive lavender fields that turn purple during the summer months.
