Awaji Island, Island in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan
Awaji is an island in the Seto Inland Sea between the main islands of Honshu and Shikoku, connected to the mainland by two large suspension bridges. The landscape consists of gentle hills, coastal sections and farmland that stretch across its entire length.
Written sources from the 8th century describe this place as the first landmass created in Japanese creation mythology. In the 16th century a puppet theater tradition developed here that continues to this day.
The name comes from Japanese mythology and refers to the birthplace of the nation in the country's oldest written records. Fields grow onions and flowers that shape regional dishes and are sold at local markets.
Crossing between the two bridges in the north and south takes about an hour by car. Near the coast you find swimming areas and walking paths, while the interior remains quieter.
Between the southern end and Shikoku, tidal whirlpools form that rank among the most powerful in the world and can be observed from special viewing boats. The phenomenon occurs due to the narrow channel and tidal range between the inner and outer seas.
