Amu Plaza Kagoshima, shopping mall
Amu Plaza Kagoshima is a large shopping center directly attached to Kagoshima-Chūō Station, spanning seven floors with approximately 190 different shops. The complex offers clothing, accessories, food, and everyday items, along with multiple restaurants serving traditional Japanese dishes and local specialties.
The project was planned in the 1980s with various concepts that were revised over time. Construction began in 2003, and the center opened in September 2004, shortly after the Shinkansen high-speed train line arrived at the city.
The name 'Amu' comes from the English word 'amuse', reflecting the shopping center's playful character. It has become a gathering place where locals shop, meet friends, and spend leisure time, forming part of the city's daily rhythm.
The center sits directly north of the station's east gate, making it easily accessible for travelers and locals. Signage is in Japanese and partly in English, helping international visitors navigate the space without difficulty.
Atop the building sits the Ferris wheel Amuran, visible from many parts of the city and a symbol of the city's modern growth. The roughly 15-minute ride offers views of the city and the active volcano Sakurajima across the water.
