Kamigamo Shrine

Kamigamo Shrine features two prominent scarlet torii gates leading to multiple wooden structures surrounded by carefully maintained gardens along the Kamo River.

The shrine, established in 678, received imperial patronage during the Heian period and became one of the most important religious centers in ancient Kyoto.

Local farmers regularly present agricultural offerings, including daikon radishes, to honor the shrine's deity Kamo Wake-Ikazuchi, the god of thunder.

The shrine welcomes visitors from 5:30 AM to 5:00 PM throughout the year, with access through multiple city bus routes from central Kyoto.

Shinto monks create two circular sand cones each morning in the shrine's courtyard, symbolizing the connection between divine spirits and the human world.
