Moriya, Suburban city in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan
Moriya is a city in Ibaraki Prefecture, located in southwestern Kantō on the main island of Honshū. The city sits in a low-lying area marked by rice paddies and waterways, bounded by three rivers on different sides.
The settlement began as a castle town under the Soma clan in the 12th century, when the area was part of northern Shimosa Province. The modern city was officially established in 1970 after several local areas merged together.
Annual community gatherings and traditional festivals throughout the year bring together residents to celebrate local customs and seasonal changes.
The city can be reached by train through the Tsukuba Express line and the Joso Line, both of which connect directly to major stations. Residential areas with low-rise housing dominate the cityscape and are easy to explore on foot or by bicycle.
The city holds the smallest land area of all cities in Ibaraki Prefecture. Despite its compact size, the population grew quickly due to proximity to Tokyo and convenient rail access.
