Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant is a disabled nuclear power station located on a 3.5-square-kilometer site in the towns of Ōkuma and Futaba in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.
On March 11, 2011, following an earthquake, tsunami, and failure of cooling systems, three nuclear meltdowns and releases of radioactive materials occurred.
The disaster had major impacts on Japan's economy, environment, and energy policies, leading to an ongoing national debate about nuclear power.
The decommissioning process is expected to take at least four decades. In the meantime, it's closed for visitation due to high radiation levels.
It is recognized as the largest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986.
