Kamioka Observatory, Scientific research facility in Hida, Japan

Kamioka Observatory is a research facility buried deep within an abandoned mine, using massive amounts of pure water to detect particles from space. Inside are specially built detectors that record the tiniest events when particles pass through the water.

The facility was set up in a closed mine to study particles arriving from outside Earth. In 1998, researchers here made a breakthrough discovery about the nature of these particles that changed our understanding of physics.

Scientists from around the world work side by side at this facility to solve mysteries of particle physics and share their findings. The place shows how nations come together to search for fundamental answers about how the universe works.

The site is located far underground and is not easy to reach, so planning ahead is important. Visitors should bring warm clothes since the underground spaces are cool and access is limited to certain times.

Deep underground, the mine naturally shields the facility from radiation that would otherwise interfere with measurements. This is why scientists chose this buried location to conduct their most sensitive experiments.
