Omuta, Industrial port city in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan

Located on the east coast of the Ariake Sea in northern Kyushu, Omuta stretches across 81 square kilometers with modern harbor facilities and chemical manufacturing plants.

Coal extraction started in 1721 and the Miike coal mine operated until 1997, transforming Omuta from a rural area into a major industrial center of Japan.

The Daijayama Port Festival features giant dragon-shaped floats that create sparks and engage in ritual destruction to ward off misfortune according to local beliefs.

The city connects to major transportation networks through the Kyushu Shinkansen and Kagoshima Main Line railways, providing direct access to Fukuoka City and beyond.

The closure of coal mines led to land subsidence, causing farmland submersion beneath the sea and requiring extensive government intervention for area revitalization.
