Fukugon-ji, Buddhist temple of the Obaku school in Yanagawa, Japan

Fukugon-ji is a Buddhist temple of the Obaku school located in Yanagawa, featuring a main hall dedicated to Shaka Nyorai and a bell tower with traditional designs. The complex displays typical Zen architectural elements arranged across its grounds.

The temple was established in 1587 by Tachibana Muneshige and transitioned to the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism in 1669 under Tachibana Tadashige. These two moments shaped the site's religious heritage and architectural character.

The temple functions as the funeral temple for the Tachibana clan, with all nine families buried on the premises behind the main hall.

The temple is located at an easy-to-find spot in Yanagawa and welcomes visitors interested in Buddhist architecture and temple culture. The grounds are freely accessible, allowing you to explore the buildings and surroundings at your own pace.

The cemetery grounds contain the graves of several people, including notable figures in Japanese literary history. This connection between spirituality and literary heritage makes the site interesting for different kinds of visitors.
