Aso, Volcanic city in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan

The city of Aso extends across 376 square kilometers within a massive caldera, featuring grasslands, mountains, and an active volcano crater at Mount Aso.

The area mentioned in the Nihon Shoki chronicles as Aso-no-kuni underwent several transformations until February 11, 2005, when three municipalities merged to form the current city.

The Aso Shrine, established in 282 BCE, stands as one of Japan's oldest Shinto sanctuaries and maintains traditional ceremonies despite earthquake damage in 2016.

Visitors access Aso through the JR Kyushu Hohi Main Line or by car via National Routes 57, 212, and 265, with rental vehicles available at Kumamoto Station.

The Kusa-Senrigahama grasslands within the caldera provide opportunities for horseback riding tours across natural pastures surrounded by volcanic formations.
