Kusa-Senrigahama, Natural monument grassland in Aso, Japan.
Kusa-Senrigahama is a wide, open grassland located at 1139 meters elevation at the base of Mount Eboshi. The space features rolling meadows with a central pond that punctuates the landscape.
This landscape was formed by volcanic activity from Mount Aso roughly 90000 years ago, creating its geological foundation. Human use over centuries has then shaped the grassland into the form we see today.
Shepherds and local farmers have long grazed animals across this grassland, and their work continues to shape how the land looks today. This daily use keeps the prairie open and defines its character.
A bus from JR Aso Station takes about 35 minutes to reach the site, with services running year-round. Visitors should come prepared for changing weather and bring layers for comfort.
The grassland spans across two municipalities and undergoes striking seasonal color shifts from green summers to silver winters. These dramatic transformations make each visit feel quite different depending on the time of year.
