Minamiaso, Rural village in Aso District, Japan
Minamiaso is a rural village in the southern part of the Aso Caldera, sitting between volcanic peaks and forested mountains. The settlement spreads across rolling terrain with open fields and woodland areas that create its distinctive landscape.
The current village came together in 2005 through the merger of three smaller communities. This consolidation created the administrative structure that exists today.
Life in the village centers on raising cattle and growing crops in the fertile volcanic soil that defines the region. This agricultural work shapes the daily rhythm and appearance of the community.
The village is accessible by train on the JR Kyushu Hohi Main Line to Tateno Station or by car via National Routes 57 and 325. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring weather-appropriate clothing since the hilly terrain involves plenty of walking.
The Shirakawa River contains ten natural water springs recognized among Japan's hundred finest waters. These crystal-clear sources attract visitors interested in the purity and quality found in this region.
