Takashima

Takashima extends along the western shore of Lake Biwa, encompassing mountainous terrain, forests, and two major rivers forming alluvial fans in the east.

The city developed as a crucial transportation junction connecting ancient capitals Kyoto and Nara with the Hokuriku Region through the passages around Lake Biwa.

Shirahige Shrine, established 2000 years ago, features a torii gate standing in Lake Biwa and serves as a center for marriage, academic, and longevity prayers.

Visitors reach Takashima from Kyoto in 50 minutes by train through Omi-Takashima Station, with bicycle rentals and interpreter guides available at tourist centers.

The Avenue of Metasequoias presents 500 dawn redwood trees spanning 2.4 kilometers, displaying different colors through four distinct seasons.
