Chion-in, Buddhist temple in Higashiyama district, Kyoto, Japan

The main hall of Chion-in Temple exhibits traditional Japanese architectural elements with extensive gold decorations and intricate wooden carvings throughout its interior.

Founded in 1175 by Buddhist monk Honen, Chion-in Temple became the headquarters of the Jodo Buddhist sect in 1523 under significant patronage from the Tokugawa shogunate.

The temple maintains its position as the principal temple of Jodo Buddhism, where monks perform daily ceremonies and maintain traditional Buddhist practices.

Visitors can access Chion-in Temple via an 8-minute walk from Higashiyama Station, with the grounds open daily from 9:00 to 16:00 and separate fees for garden areas.

The temple houses Japan's largest wooden gate, measuring 24 meters in height and 50 meters in width, constructed in 1621 using 70,000 roof tiles.
