Shōgunzuka, Ancient burial mound in Yamashina-ku, Japan
The circular burial mound rises 216 meters above sea level on the eastern mountains of Kyoto, offering north and west observation decks for city views.
Emperor Kanmu selected this location in the 8th century to survey the valley before establishing Kyoto as the capital city of Japan.
A clay statue of a general measuring two and a half meters, dressed in battle armor with weapons, remains sealed within the burial chamber.
The mound connects to hiking trails from Shorenin Temple and Chionin Temple, requiring 30 to 45 minutes of walking through steep forest paths.
According to local beliefs, the mound produces rumbling sounds when potential threats approach the city of Kyoto, acting as a protective monument.
