Shōgunzuka

Shōgunzuka is a circular burial mound located 216 meters above sea level in the eastern mountains of Kyoto. The site features viewing platforms on its north and west sides that look out over the city below.

The mound was established in the 8th century after Emperor Kanmu selected this location to survey the valley. This occurred shortly before the founding of Kyoto as Japan's new capital city.

The mound was built to honor an important military leader whose image remains sealed within the burial chamber. It shows how powerful figures were remembered in ancient Japan through monumental construction.

You can hike to the mound from either Shorenin Temple or Chionin Temple along paths that climb steeply through the forest. Plan to spend between 30 and 45 minutes walking, so wear proper shoes and allow enough time for the trek.

According to local tradition, the mound is said to produce rumbling sounds when threats approach the city of Kyoto. This belief reinforces its reputation as a protective guardian watching over the region.
