Kōdai-ji, Buddhist temple in Higashiyama district, Kyoto, Japan

The temple features traditional architecture with a central garden containing two ornamental ponds connected by bridges in the Momoyama period style.

Nene, wife of feudal lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, established Kodai-ji in 1606 to commemorate her husband and create a spiritual sanctuary.

The temple exhibits exceptional examples of makie lacquerware technique, where gold powder designs emerge against black lacquer surfaces throughout interior spaces.

Located 10 minutes from Gion Shijo Station, the temple opens daily with extended hours during spring and autumn for illuminated garden viewings.

The Otama-ya hall contains original ceiling components from Hideyoshi's ship and houses seated statues of both the feudal lord and his wife Nene.
