Higashiyama-ku

The Higashiyama district extends along the eastern mountains of Kyoto, containing narrow lanes, wooden buildings, and traditional merchant shops between Kiyomizudera and Yasaka Shrine.

Established as an administrative ward in 1929, Higashiyama developed into a central location for temples and religious structures during the Muromachi period of Japanese history.

The district maintains multiple geisha areas where visitors can observe these traditional Japanese entertainers walking between tea houses in their elaborate kimonos.

Most establishments in Higashiyama operate from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the two-kilometer walking route from Kiyomizudera to Yasaka Shrine requiring approximately two hours.

The streets of Higashiyama contain centuries-old shops selling local specialties, including handcrafted pottery, traditional sweets, and preserved vegetables passed down through generations.
