Osakasayama, Residential city in southeastern Osaka Prefecture, Japan
Osakasayama is a residential city in the southeastern part of Osaka Prefecture, stretching between gentle hills and plains. The city consists mainly of residential neighborhoods with low-rise buildings, small shops, and parks arranged around the central pond.
The area belonged to Kawachi Province in ancient times and developed over centuries into an agricultural region with settlements around the old reservoir. The city received its official status on October 1, 1987.
The Sayama Pond has supplied water to surrounding rice paddies for more than a thousand years and remains a visible part of the region's agriculture. The associated museum displays models and maps that explain how the reservoir works and why it mattered to farmers.
The place sits about 15 kilometers south of Osaka and can be reached by the Nankai Railway's Kōya Line or via National Route 310. Visitors can walk around the pond and visit the museum standing on its shore.
The dam of the Sayama Pond was built in the 7th century, making it the oldest dam structure in Japan. The original construction has undergone several reinforcements over the centuries, but the basic structure has been preserved.
