Kuchinoerabu Island, Volcanic island in Ōsumi Islands, Japan
Kuchinoerabu is a small inhabited island in the Osumi group, located in the waters south of Kyushu. Two peaks shape the landscape, both of volcanic origin and covered with green vegetation.
In the early 1930s an eruption caused heavy damage and forced many residents to flee. Since then the peak has shown regular weak to moderate activity that continues to be monitored.
Local residents maintain traditional fishing practices and agricultural methods, while operating four thermal baths: Honmura, Yumugi, Nemachi, and Nishinoyu onsen.
Ferries link the island with Miyanoura port on Yakushima and take just under two hours. The terrain is steep and partly rough, so good footwear and some stamina are helpful for walking.
Hot springs bubble up in several spots and locals use them for communal bathing. Fruit bats nest near fig trees and fly out at dusk.
