Ōko Falls

Ōko Falls is a waterfall in Yakushima, Japan, where water plunges 88 meters down granite cliffs into a deep pool. The area is surrounded by extensive cedar forests and moss-covered rocks that create a lush and verdant setting.

The waterfall received national recognition in 1990 when it was included in Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls list. This honor highlighted the site's established importance in Japan's appreciation of natural beauty.

The waterfall holds spiritual significance in local beliefs, with residents viewing it as a place where forest spirits dwell. The surrounding cedar forests are tended using methods that reflect deep respect for the natural world.

A paved walking path from the main parking area leads to several viewing platforms offering different perspectives of the water. The trails are accessible and clearly marked to help with navigation.

On sunny days, rainbows form between 10 AM and noon when sunlight hits the water spray. This natural phenomenon is best viewed from the lower observation platforms.
