Mount Kuromi

Mount Kuromi is a peak in Yakushima's mountainous landscape with distinctive granite formations rising to 1,831 meters. From the summit, views stretch across the region's layered ridges and valleys, though visibility changes depending on weather conditions.

The peak became part of a protected national area in 1964, and later contributed to the island's recognition as a natural World Heritage site. This designation marked an important shift in acknowledging the region's ecological importance.

The peak is included in a famous list of Japanese summits that draws mountaineers from across the country. Its significance for hikers reflects a deep connection between people and mountains that goes beyond the physical challenge of climbing.

The trail begins at an entrance on the island's southeastern side, roughly two to three hours from the nearest larger settlement. The climb and descent together take a full day, so bring plenty of water and snacks for the journey.

The region receives significantly more rain than most other places in Japan, creating conditions that support rare plant species. The summit is consequently surrounded by moss-covered forests that give the mountain a distinctive appearance.
