Katori, Merchant town in Chiba Prefecture, Japan

The Sawara district in Katori features traditional wooden merchant houses built along the Ono River with stone steps descending to former trading docks.

Following the Meiji Restoration, Katori merged with Sawara, Omigawa, and Higashi-Daito in 1951, forming a larger municipality that became a city in 2006.

The Sawara Taisai festivals, recognized as UNESCO heritage, showcase zelkova wood floats parading through streets during three days in July and October.

The city maintains 16 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 4 high schools, serving a population of 74,469 residents across 262 square kilometers.

Inoh Tadataka, who created the first complete geographical map of Japan, resided in Katori, where his former house remains preserved along the Ono River.
