The stone walls of Marugame Castle rise 60 meters from the base to the summit, featuring curved walls designed to prevent earthquake damage.
Ikoma Chikamasa established the original fortress in 1587, and the current structure was reconstructed in 1641 during the creation of Western Sanuki domain.
The wooden main tower represents one of only twelve original Edo period castle keeps remaining in Japan, maintaining its authentic interior structure.
The castle opens daily from 9:00 to 16:30, with an entrance fee of 200 yen and requires a 10-minute walk from JR Marugame Station.
The castle features the highest stone walls in Japan, constructed using the kirikomihagi technique where rocks are precisely fitted together without mortar.
