Nippon Maru, Four-masted barque museum ship in Minatomirai, Japan
Nippon Maru is a four-masted sailing vessel measuring 97 meters long with 29 sails, now preserved as a museum ship in Nippon Maru Memorial Park in Yokohama. The vessel displays its original rigging, yards, and equipment from its working years as a training ship.
Built in 1930, the vessel served as a training ship for Japanese sailors for over five decades before being retired. It was then relocated to Yokohama Harbor where it continues to stand as a reminder of maritime history.
The vessel reflects Japan's dedication to maritime education and naval heritage. Walking the decks, you experience how the ship once trained sailors in seamanship and preserved traditional construction techniques across decades.
The ship is open for visits from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, allowing you to explore the deck and interior spaces at your own pace. Keep in mind that some areas have steep stairs and narrow passages, so sturdy shoes are recommended.
The vessel sits anchored in a former dry dock dating back to 1898, which itself is designated as a national cultural property. This historic harbor facility provides an extraordinary setting where both the ship and the dock's architecture tell the story together.
