Minatomirai, Waterfront district in Yokohama, Japan
Minatomirai is a waterfront district in Nishi-ku, Yokohama, built on land reclaimed from the sea on a former port and shipyard site. It is made up of tall buildings, shopping malls, museums, a small amusement park, and a wide promenade along the harbor.
The area was an active shipyard and port until the 1980s, when the city of Yokohama began planning its transformation into a modern urban center. Development continued through the 1990s and into the 2000s, gradually adding the buildings and facilities that now define the district.
Every summer, fireworks over the harbor draw large crowds to the waterfront, turning the promenade into a shared gathering space. The wide pedestrian paths along the water are used daily by residents who come to eat, walk, or simply sit and watch the ships.
The district is easy to walk through, with most attractions close to each other and well signposted in both Japanese and English. Weekends and holidays bring larger crowds to the waterfront, so a weekday visit tends to feel more open.
An outdoor gondola line called the Yokohama Air Cabin runs above the district, connecting Sakuragichō Station to the waterfront in about six minutes. From the cabins, you get a view of the rooftops and the harbor that is simply not possible from street level.
