Asa Station, Rail station in Sanyō-Onoda, Japan
Asa Station is a railway facility in Sanyō-Onoda, Yamaguchi Prefecture, serving both regional trains and high-speed connections. The facility has two island platforms positioned between multiple tracks, allowing travelers to transfer between different lines.
The facility opened on December 3, 1900, when the Sanyō Railway extended its line from Mitajiri. It later became part of the national network and operated a freight depot until the 1980s.
The name comes from the local Asa district, and its characters 厚狭 appear on platform signs and building facades throughout the facility. Travelers encounter traditional Japanese signage combining kanji, hiragana, and Latin script following the classic railway format still in use.
Around 1100 passengers use the facility on an average day, and staff members are available to assist with connections to the Sanyō Line. Travelers will find information counters and guidance for transfers to other regional routes.
The former freight depot stopped handling cargo in 1984 but continued serving as a locomotive maintenance facility until 2013. This workshop use persisted for nearly three decades after freight activity ended.
