Gonzo, Animation studio in Suginami, Japan
Gonzo is an animation studio in Suginami occupying several floors of the Ogikubo Fukuchi Building, where animation teams develop digital productions and television series. The premises feature drawing desks, computers, and meeting rooms where staff work on different projects simultaneously.
Former Gainax staff founded the studio in 1992 as an independent company in Tokyo. Over the years it expanded its portfolio from television series to international projects and music videos.
The studio takes its name from an Italian word meaning ruffian. This choice reflects a desire to position itself as an outsider in the animation industry.
The studio welcomes visitors from Monday to Friday during standard business hours, but tours must be booked in advance. Access to the workspace is typically granted only to industry professionals.
The studio produced the music video Breaking the Habit for American band Linkin Park. This collaboration marked an entry into international music video production beyond traditional television work.
