Hiyama Subprefecture, Administrative subprefecture in western Hokkaido, Japan
Hiyama is an administrative subprefecture in western Hokkaido located on the Oshima Peninsula and stretches along the Sea of Japan with mountains and coastal areas. The region is shaped by a mix of mountainous terrain and seaside landscapes that define its sparsely populated character.
The subprefecture was established in 1897 and underwent major changes in 2010 with an administrative reform that created its current structure. This reorganization was one of the last significant shifts in the region's governance since its founding.
The region keeps connections to Ainu heritage through local traditions that remain part of everyday life and crafts. In Esashi, the main city, classical folk songs like Esashi Oiwake are still performed and passed down by people in the community.
The region has had no railway service since 2014, so residents and visitors rely on road transport to move around. Car rental and local buses are the main ways to travel within this area.
The area includes Okushiri Island and is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Hokkaido. Despite the low population numbers, the island maintains its own identity with local character.
