Shiraoi

Shiraoi is a coastal town in Iburi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, situated partly within Shikotsu-Toya National Park with extensive forest coverage extending to the Pacific Ocean. The landscape combines forested hills with access to the sea, creating a natural setting for both outdoor activities and cultural sites.

The Sendai domain built a fort in Shiraoi in 1867, beginning local development during Japan's period of political change. The conflict that followed the next year ended this early effort and shaped the town's later trajectory.

The Ainu Museum, Poroto Kotan, displays traditional crafts, performances, and daily objects from the indigenous people of Hokkaido. You can walk through reconstructed houses and experience how the Ainu lived and worked.

Multiple train stations on the Muroran Main Line connect the town to major cities throughout Hokkaido and beyond. The Japan National Route 36 provides convenient road access for visitors arriving by car or bus.

The town hosts four seasonal festivals that mark different times of the year with local celebrations. The Beef Festival in June and the Dosanko Winter Festival in February draw visitors for food and entertainment.
