Kamijima, town in Ochi district, Ehime prefecture, Japan
Kamijima is a group of 25 islands in the Seto Inland Sea off the coast of Ehime, with seven permanently inhabited. The five main islands of Yugejima, Sashima, Iwagijima, Ikinajima, and Uoshima are connected by bridges or accessible by ferry, while smaller islands can only be reached by boat.
The islands were part of Iyo Province during the Edo period and played a key role in trade and daimyo travel routes. The village of Yuge was founded in 1889 and developed into a town before merging with nearby villages in 2004 to form the current municipality.
Life centers on the sea and fishing traditions. You will see this reflected in how locals prepare meals with fresh seafood and how the community gathers during seasonal festivals that celebrate the water and maritime heritage.
Ferries connect the islands several times daily and provide access to the mainland. Wear comfortable shoes, bring cash as many small shops do not accept cards, and check ferry schedules and weather conditions, especially in winter when services are limited.
Takaikamijima, a tiny island with about 15 residents, became known for colorful murals painted on its buildings. This small island shows how remote places have gained new attention through local art initiatives.
