Kagoshima Airport, International airport in Mizobe-Chō Fumoto, Japan
Kagoshima Airport is a commercial aerodrome in Mizobe-chō Fumoto, located at 272 meters (892 feet) above sea level and equipped with a 3-kilometer (1.9-mile) runway. The facility includes a terminal building with nine gates serving both domestic and international air traffic.
The facility opened in 1972 after air operations moved from an earlier site at Kōrimoto that had been in use since 1944. The relocation allowed expansion to handle growing passenger numbers and larger aircraft.
The name comes from the nearby city of Kagoshima, while the terminal offers travelers a first glimpse of southern Kyushu through displays of local pottery and textiles. Passengers can discover Satsuma crafts and other regional products in the shop areas lining the building.
Buses run directly to Kagoshima-Chūō Station and take roughly 40 minutes via the expressway. The terminal is equipped with elevators and escalators, making all areas accessible even with luggage.
The runway was built on a flattened hilltop, giving the aerodrome an elevated position above the surrounding landscape. This location offers travelers sweeping views of volcanic mountains and the Kagoshima coastline during approach.
