Kayabe district, Administrative district in Oshima Subprefecture, Japan
Kayabe district is located in southern Hokkaido along Uchiura Bay, encompassing the towns of Shikabe and Mori as its main communities. The region features a coastal setting with rolling terrain, agricultural land, and smaller settlements spread throughout the area.
The district was formally established as an administrative area in 1879 and underwent significant changes through municipal mergers with Hakodate and nearby areas in the early 2000s. These reorganizations shaped its current boundaries and community structure.
Fishing traditions shape daily life here, with families and businesses centered around the seasonal rhythms of what the sea provides each year.
The district is best explored by car since the main towns are spread across the coastal area with distances between them. Visitors will find basic services in both Shikabe and Mori, though planning ahead is helpful given the rural character of much of the region.
The merger of Sawara town into Mori in 2005 reshaped the district's geography, creating a consolidated administrative structure with enhanced service delivery.
