Kamigyō-ku, Administrative ward in central Kyoto, Japan

Kamigyō-ku covers 7.03 square kilometers in the heart of Kyoto, with the Kamo River marking its eastern boundary and numerous government offices within its limits.

The ward, established in 1879, previously served as the residential district for Japanese royalty and aristocrats during the time when Kyoto was the imperial capital.

The district contains the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, and the headquarters of the Omotesenke and Urasenke schools of Japanese tea ceremony.

The ward office provides essential administrative services to its 83,832 residents and can be reached at 075-441-0111 for municipal assistance and information.

The Masugata Shōtengai Shopping District in Kamigyō-ku gained recognition as the setting for the 2013 anime series Tamako Market by Kyoto Animation.
