Tokyo Big Sight, Convention center in Ariake, Japan
Tokyo Big Sight is Japan's largest convention center, opened in April 1996 in Ariake on Tokyo Bay. Its Conference Tower, 58 metres high, carries four inverted pyramids of glass and titanium panels on four support shafts; the East Halls line a 600-metre glass-roofed galleria, and the West Halls surround a two-tiered atrium. The site was designed by AXS Satow and built from October 1992 to October 1995.
Construction began in 1992 and finished three years later, creating one of the largest event facilities in the region. The design followed high-tech architecture principles, emphasizing transparent materials and exposed structural supports.
Public artworks throughout the interior and exterior include sculptures and installations by contemporary artists from different countries. Visitors can view the pieces during events or while walking through the open areas, where they blend into the daily life of the facility.
The site is about 30 minutes by rail from Tokyo Station. The East Hall's galleria is 600 metres long and has moving walkways, while the East Hall stands apart from the Conference Tower. The South Hall connects directly to the West Hall's second-floor concourse and rooftop exhibition area.
The East Hall features movable roof elements that allow organizers to adjust the amount of daylight entering the exhibition spaces. This solution enables flexible lighting conditions depending on the type of goods or installations being displayed.
