Shiwaku Islands, Archipelago of 28 islands in Seto Inland Sea, Japan.
The Shiwaku Islands form an archipelago of about 28 islands in the Seto Inland Sea between Honshu and Shikoku. They feature small fishing villages with traditional wooden buildings and natural harbors.
From the 17th century until 1867, the islands served as a base for the Shiwaku Navy, which controlled maritime trade through the Seto Inland Sea. This period of naval power shaped how communities on the islands grew and organized.
The Kasashima district on Honjima preserves wooden townhouses from the Edo period, three of which visitors can enter and explore. These buildings show how successful merchants and boat builders once lived on the islands.
The islands are accessible by regular ferry service from Marugame Port or Kojima Port, with bicycle rentals available at the Honjima Ferry Terminal. Cycling is a relaxed way to explore, as most paths on the islands are flat and easy to navigate.
Mount Tomi observation point offers views of the Seto Ohashi Bridge and surrounding waters where ancient salt production techniques originated. These waters were once a center of salt-making before modern methods replaced traditional craft.
