Engyō-ji, Buddhist temple on Mount Shosha, Himeji, Japan

The temple complex spreads across the summit of Mount Shosha with multiple halls and pavilions connected by stone pathways and wooden corridors.

Monk Shoku Shonin established Engyō-ji in 966, making it a center for Buddhist teachings and practices during the Heian period in Japan.

The temple holds several Important Cultural Properties, including the Mani-den Hall with its elevated kakezukuri construction method above the mountainside.

Visitors reach the temple via a 25-minute bus ride from Himeji Station to the Mount Shosha Ropeway, which carries passengers to the temple entrance.

The temple gained international recognition as a filming location for The Last Samurai, where its buildings represented Lord Katsumoto's mountain sanctuary.
