Gifu Great Buddha, Buddhist statue at Shōhō-ji Temple, Gifu, Japan
The Gifu Great Buddha measures 13.7 meters in height and features specific facial measurements, including a 3.63-meter face length and 2.12-meter ear length.
Construction of the Buddhist statue began in 1790 under Priest Ichyuu and reached completion in 1832, requiring 38 years of dedicated craftsmanship and labor.
The statue holds Buddhist scriptures within its construction, covered by layers of clay, lacquer, and gold leaf, representing Japanese religious architectural methods.
Visitors can reach the Gifu Great Buddha by taking a 15-minute bus ride from JR Gifu Station to the Gifu Koen, Rekishi Hakubutsukan-mae stop.
The statue incorporates a central pillar made from ginkgo tree wood and uses bamboo lattices to form its structural framework beneath the exterior layers.
